Standing Waves

The standing wave needs a force applied at the correct frequency, to replace the energy lost by damping etc.

In a lab experiment you usually apply a force at one frequency only, so you can only get a standing wave at the that frequency.

The Aftermatter: What is Music?

Why do pianos and guitars sound different, and some notes work together particularly well with others? This might strike some of you as being .... The metaphor is particularly apt to handle chords, where summing together these powers of ratios ( n/(n+1)), essentially gives recognizable standing wave shapes that serve as landmarks; while imperfect approximations to these intervals give beating where the waves dont stand perfectly still. (If you play around with these ... read more

Antenna Projects: Antenna Standing Wave Ratio (SWR)

If you could visualize this phenomenon, you would see a series of current maximums and minimums standing still along the feed-line. This is why we refer to them as standing waves. At different points along the feed-line, ... read more

Standing wave calculation is wrong, I dont understand why? - Yes

Standing wave calculation is wrong, I dont understand why? The speed of a surface wave in water is not the speed of sound. Sound is a different kind of wave. The speed of a surface wave is not a constant and depends on its ... read more

Darren Loew: Why do we call standing waves as a wave if they do ...

Why do we call standing waves as a wave if they do not transfer the disturbance? The transferring of , whatever disturbance is in your mind, is not a requirement for a wave. Where did you get this notion? ... read more
