Steam Whistle, How To Build

Steam Whistle Brewing - Toronto, Ontario

Craft beers are booming all over Ontario. Each brewery has an exceptional commitment to excellence. While in Toronto the GCAT team took some time to visit the Steam Whistle Brewery. At Steam Whistle, the focus is on making a single beer – a Premium Pilsner that Canadians can be proud of. Like their slogan says: Do One Thing Really, Really Well. The GCAT team caught up with our friend Sybil Taylor, the Communications Manager, who told us about the company, its philosophy, and then took us on a tour of the 'Roundhouse'.

The Steam Whistle brewery is located at the historic John St. Roundhouse, just south of the CN Tower in downtown Toronto. The Roundhouse had functioned as a Canadian Pacific Rail steam locomotive repair facility when built in 1929 servicing steam locomotives that helped pioneer this nation. The building was restored in 1988 and integrated into a brewery which also houses a bar, offices, and warehouse facilities.

Steam Whistle developed a distinctive recipe for their single brand based on Europe's renowned brewing standards yet is brewed fresh locally at their independent, Canadian Brewery. They use traditional brewing techniques and only four natural ingredients: spring water, malted barley, hops and yeast – all GMO free.

Steam Whistle has a strong GREEN Initiative and takes pride in doing its part for the environment. Since the year 2000, Steam Whistle Brewing has opted to use Enwave's Deep Lake Water Cooling for climate control in their building instead of conventional air conditioners that rely on harmful CFC refrigerants and eat up valuable energy. The brewery uses clean, renewable power for its electricity, sourcing power from wind and low-impact hydro generators that meet or exceed the federal government's Environmental choice Program EcoLogo standard for renewable electricity.
Steam Whistle's truck fleet uses B20 Bio Fuel which is better for the environment than traditional gasoline, the company has a strong recycling program, and they were the first brewery in Canada to use a completely biodegradable cup for outdoor events.

Best of all, Steam Whistle is a clean, crisp delicious beer … and the GCAT team loves beer !

      Cheers!
